Why I swim
Swimming was my safe place when I was a teenager and I’ve been loving returning to the pool, to that rhythm, up and down the black line. The water has always soothed me. I’d love it if more people discovered or returned to that feeling and it helped. I’m swimming this March because too many young lives are lost to suicide. Every lap I swim will help make sure there’s a safe place for young people to turn when life feels overwhelming.
For Effie, KB and little me
It is my hope that all young people can live in a world that holds space for them without coercion, where they can take up space as their true selves. I honour the stories of the young people I walk beside and my cousin, Effie.
Suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people in Australia. Let’s talk and listen to lessen it! Everyone’s different and what is helpful for one person might not be for another. I know this as an Aboriginal person and from listening to young mob. I have learned the power of curiosity! Just being… sitting with, listening deeply, inviting agency… could save a life. If you’re ever unsure how to support safety with someone else or yourself, I’m always here for a yarn.
