Why I swim
I’m swimming this March because too many young lives are lost to suicide. Every lap I swim will help make sure there’s a safe place for young people to turn when life feels overwhelming.
I'm swimming to save lives
Cash is participating in Laps for Life. It means a lot to us that you’re interested in his “why.”
For Cash (10), this is deeply personal. When he was 6, he spent nearly two years in a wheelchair due to a rare bone disease called Perthes disease. During that time, he faced not only physical pain and limitations, but also isolation. He missed out on sports, normal school activities, and the everyday freedom most kids take for granted. It was an incredibly challenging season, and it gave him firsthand experience with what it feels like to struggle quietly and feel different from everyone else.
More recently, our family has been devastated by the loss of his 19-year-old uncle to suicide. The impact has been heartbreaking and has shaken us all. For Cash, it has brought mental health into sharp focus in a way no child should have to experience. He understands now, in his own way, how important it is to talk about struggles, to check in on people, and to support services that help those who are hurting.
Laps for Life is his way of turning pain into purpose. He wants to move his body in a way he once couldn’t, while raising awareness and funds for mental health support — so that other kids, teens, and families might not have to experience the same loss.
We’re incredibly proud of him for channeling his experiences into something positive and hopeful.
Thank you again for caring and for supporting him.
Warmly,
Cash's mum Ellie
Suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people in Australia.
More than 1 in 3 are experiencing mental health difficulties, yet over a million are not getting the support they need.
ReachOut provides anonymous, free and 100% online services so young people can find a safe place to connect, share and get help when life feels overwhelming.
I’m taking part in Laps for Life to make sure these vital services are always there. Please donate to my fundraiser and help more young people get the support they deserve.
