Make a Splash

Making a splash in mental health by swimming to save lives

Suicide is the leading cause of death in people aged 15-24.

1 in every 2 young people will know someone who died by suicide by the time they turn 25, and in Australia, more than 7 million Australians have been close to someone who has died in this way.

Mental health awareness and support aim to reduce this number by increasing information and education, as well as giving access to services affected individuals need. This is especially important in higher risk populations- males have a 3x higher risk than females, and Indigenous Australians die at a rate double that of non-Indigenous Australians. Generational trauma and historical discrimination, dispossession, and exclusion contribute to poorer mental health in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Therefore it is necessary that mental health efforts are directed to these groups that are in the greatest need of support and awareness efforts.
