We’re swimming to save lives for our jarjums ( children)
Suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people in Australia. Advocating and protecting the rights and safety of children and young people is at the core of everything I do. It is heartbreaking that suicide even becomes a thought, to leave this world, to think it would be easier not here. Suicide does not discriminate but it does disproportionately impact First People. As a mother, friend, community member and someone who has lost many to suicide, I do believe we can ensure those in need have support. I do believe in our country and lands and I believe we can support each other. There remains even higher intersections for Indigenous children and young people.
More than 1 in 3 are experiencing mental health difficulties, yet over a million are not getting the support they need.
ReachOut provides anonymous, free and 100% online services so young people can find a safe place to connect, share and get help when life feels overwhelming.
We're taking part in Laps for Life to make sure these vital services are always there. Please donate to our fundraiser and help more young people get the support they deserve.
I lost one of my first dear ones with loves and my dearest sacred mum to suicide. They both loved the ocean, loved swimming, and my mum always felt free when she surfed. For me, these laps are for them, and for all our jarjums ( children). If you also have the means I strongly encourage supporting yarn, a mental health service for first people also. All the love in the world takes all of us and how precious can we make it if we share that care and heart a bit more.
