This March, I’m swimming to honour Alicia and save lives.
As some may know in November last year, my late wife Alicia lost her personal battle with depression and took her own life.
Whilst having a general awareness of the prevalence of depression in our society, something I did not know is that suicide is the leading cause of death for young people in Australia. That means that each year, more young people die by suicide than in car accidents or from cancer.
I have long been a keen swimmer and see this challenge as a good oppertunity to provide a healthy exercise routine for myself, to honour Alicia and hopefully to help provide resources for others to better navigate the difficult, painful personal experience that characterises depression. While nothing can bring back the love of my life Alicia, by sponsoring my participation in Laps for Life, you'll be helping ReachOut achieve its mission of ensuring that other young people have the support they need to be happy and well.
Lastly I'd just like to encourage anyone suffering from anxiety or depression to please reach out for support from close freinds, colleagues or mental health professionals, because you really do mean so much to the people in your life. There is no shame is accepting help and there are people who really do care.
